Current Information:Age-22 45 Himley Road, Tooting On 16th July, 1916, 23rd London of 142 Brigade, 47th Division left their billets in Bully Grenay and moved into the Souchez sector of the front line, just to the north of Arras. Here they stayed until relieved on 24th July. The Battalion Diary gives little information about this period in the trenches but does record that on 18th July, seven men were killed and eight men were wounded. However, we know from the Battalion Diary of 20th London, who were in nearby trenches, that both sides engaged in regular artillery duels and it is highly likely that this was the cause of these casualties, one of whom was Alfred Allen. |
